TRANSFORMASI MAKNA MAKANAN DALAM BUDAYA DIGITAL: DARI KESADARAN SPIRITUAL KE MATERIALISTIK

The transformation of food culture in Indonesia reflects a shift from spiritual and social meanings toward material orientation, influenced by commercialization, urbanization, and the visual culture of social media. This study examines the phenomenon through traditional practices such as tumpeng and selametan, as well as contemporary trends like mukbang and viral cuisine. Using a literature-based approach and digital phenomenon analysis, food is understood as a sign that has shifted from a medium of gratitude, social bonding, and value transmission into a commodity driven by impression and monetization. This shift results in the weakening of symbolic meaning and the decline of communal spaces as sites for value reproduction. However, digital platforms still offer opportunities for revitalization when used for meaningful narrative documentation and participatory practices. Therefore, integrative strategies are needed, including value-based education, intergenerational engagement, and reflective use of digital media, to restore food as an ethical and social medium rather than merely visual consumption.
