This study disseminates the shift in media trust and public opinion formation patterns among Indonesia's young generation (18-30 years old) amidst the dominance of digital alternative media. Using a mixed methods approach with a sequential explanatory design, data were collected through semi-structured questionnaires to 51 randomly selected Communication students of UIN Tulungagung. The main findings reveal: (1) Social media (Instagram, TikTok, Twitter) is the primary information channel for 78.4% of respondents, with the frequency of alternative media access (86.3% often/very often) far exceeding mainstream media (70.6% sometimes/rarely); (2) Trust in alternative media (47.1%) is higher than mainstream media (25.5%), encouragement of perceived freedom of expression (60.8%) and speed of updates (54.9%), while distrust of the mainstream is mainly due to the intervention of capital owners (72.5%) and reliance on politics (56.9%); (3) Alternative media has a stronger influence (35.3% strongly influences) on the formation of socio-political opinions compared to mainstream media (31.4%), especially in mobilizing participation in social movements (68.6% involved, 74.5% triggered by alternatives); (4) A digital literacy paradox occurs where 92.2% of respondents are confident in digital navigation but only 31.4% routinely verify content and 49% have difficulty distinguishing between fact and opinion; and (5) Fragmentation of the information space is characterized by echo chambers (63% follow like-minded accounts) and filter bubbles (32%). This study highlights the urgency of strengthening critical media literacy, transforming transparent media business models, and co-regulation policies to build a healthy and deliberative information ecosystem for the future of Indonesia's digital democracy.
