Focus and Scope

Al Furqan: Jurnal Ilmu Al Qur’an dan Tafsir (p-ISSN 2621-5438, e-ISSN 2656-6877) is a double-blind peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by the Qur’anic Studies and Exegesis Study Programme, Faculty of Ushuluddin, Universitas Tarbiyatut Tholabah Lamongan, Indonesia. It publishes two issues a year, in June and December.

Aims

The journal aims to advance rigorous, original and contextually grounded scholarship on the Qur’an and its interpretation. It provides an international forum where philological, historical, theological, social-scientific and digital approaches to the Qur’an meet, with particular attention to the exegetical traditions of Southeast Asia and their place in global Qur’anic studies.

Scope

We welcome research articles on, but not limited to, the following areas:

  1. Qur’anic exegesis and hermeneutics: classical and contemporary methods of tafsir, maqāṣid-oriented interpretation, thematic (mawḍūʿī) and scientific exegesis.
  2. Exegetes and traditions of interpretation: intellectual biographies, schools of tafsir, and regional and vernacular tafsir, especially in the Malay-Indonesian world.
  3. The Qur’an and contemporary issues: environment, public health, pluralism, gender, peacebuilding, economics and global ethics.
  4. Living Qur’an: reception, recitation, performance and everyday practices surrounding the Qur’an in Muslim communities.
  5. Qur’anic manuscripts and textual history: codicology, orthography, variant readings (qirāʾāt), codification and the history of the muṣḥaf.
  6. Qur’anic language and literature: Arabic linguistics, rhetoric (balāgha), stylistics and translation studies.
  7. Qur’an, ethics and law: the Qur’anic foundations of Islamic ethics, law and legislation.
  8. Qur’an, psychology and spirituality: well-being, character formation and spiritual experience.
  9. Digital Qur’anic studies: digital humanities, corpus analysis, artificial intelligence and online tafsir.
  10. Interdisciplinary studies that bring the Qur’an into dialogue with sociology, anthropology, education, economics or the natural sciences.

Article types

  • Research articles (4,000–8,000 words) reporting original textual, historical, field or empirical research.
  • Review articles that critically synthesise a body of literature and propose a research agenda.

Descriptive summaries without analysis, sermons, and papers outside Qur’anic studies are not considered.

Audience

Researchers, lecturers, postgraduate students and practitioners in Qur’anic studies, tafsir, Islamic studies and the study of religion, in Indonesia and internationally.

Language and publication

  • Articles are published in English, with the title, abstract and keywords in English.
  • Two issues per year (June and December); accepted articles may appear online first.
  • Every article is assigned a Crossref DOI (prefix 10.58518) and is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
